The Standard
Queen bed, kitchenette, patio. The quiet workhorse that started it all.
from NZ$139 / night
Rotorua · New Zealand · S 38°08' E 176°15'
Thirty-nine single-level rooms, a warm thermal pool, and a garden that breathes. Run by a young team who believe a good night's sleep is the most generous thing a town can give you.
The idea
Pure Motel began the way most good ideas do — with more conviction than capital, and a key we wanted to hand people ourselves. We are six people who still make the beds on Sunday. Our whole job is simple: heating on before you arrive, warm towels at the ready, a kettle already full.
Nothing clever. Nothing complicated. Just thirty-nine rooms done properly, on one level, set back from the road — because a motel should feel like arriving home, not like checking in.

From the guest book
“The heating was on before we arrived. Vin brewed us a pot of tea in the rain. This is how hospitality is supposed to feel.”

The guest book
We read every one. We answer every one. A few pages, below, unchanged.
The kettle was literally full, the towels were warm, and Vin waved us in from the rain like old friends. A model of how hospitality should feel.
Skylight above the bath, underfloor heating, dead quiet. We've stayed in Rotorua ten times — nothing touches these rooms at this price.
You can tell a real team owns this place. The garden, the pantry, the pool — every touch is thought through. Our kids didn't want to leave.
Only critique is our own planning. Comfortable beds, genuinely quiet, and the staff remember your name the next morning. Rare.
Bath, robes, lake view, and the quietest morning we've had in years. The free pantry is a lovely touch of faith in guests.
After Auckland hotels, this was the reset button we needed. EV charging worked, pool was hot, guest book full of kind words.
We arrived at 9 pm, exhausted. Tea, biscuits, and a room with the heat on. I will stand by this place forever.
Proving that motel doesn't have to mean average. The garden barbecue night was a genuine surprise highlight.
Your words are the hearth this place runs on. Leave a note, and we'll read it over breakfast.
Write in the guest bookOur story
Pure Motel began the way most good ideas do — with more conviction than capital, and a key we wanted to hand people ourselves. Two founders walked away from comfortable jobs for one belief: a place to stay should feel like arriving home, not checking in.
So the motel is single-level. Rooms face the garden, not the carpark. The heating is on before you arrive, the kettle is full, and the towels are warm. Six people, young and a little obsessive about the small things — because the small things are the whole job.
Today the register fills with families, road-trippers, honeymooners and locals who just need a night away. Same key, same pot of tea, same promise: you arrive tired, you leave light.

What we hold to
No scripted check-ins. If we say tea, there is tea.
Quiet after 9 pm. It's a rule, not a request.
Every room opens to grass and birdsong.
Little things, done properly, every day.
